Due to enhancements in its infrastructure that created the capability for offering programmes in many different fields, its name was changed to Pakistan Institute of Engineering & Applied Sciences in 1997. However, the orthography of the University's name were unbroken totally different i.e. "i" was used instead of "e" for Ezāfe that links the two words in Jinnah's title Quaid-e-Azam.
